The Greek Catholic Church of Galilee has a new archbishop, the former Archbishop of Tyre in Lebanon George Bakouni.

The new archbishop was born in Lebanon in 1962. He was ordained a priest in 1995 and three years later was appointed Rector of the Seminary of the Greek Catholic Church in Lebanon, a role in which he served until 2004. A year later, he was appointed Archbishop of Tyre, where he has served until now, restoring the diocese, much damaged during the war and promoting relations between Christians and Muslims. The Synod of the Greek Catholic Church has chosen the new archbishop at its latest meeting in Lebanon which ends on Saturday, June 21. He replaces Archbishop Elias Chacour and the Maronite Archbishop Moussa al-Hage, who replaced Chacour when he resigned.

We wish him well in his new mission in Galilee!
