The house belongs to the Gertrude Luckner Association. In 1990, the association bought a small house at 3 Gottlieb Schumacher Street in Haifa, which is situated parallel to Ben Gurion Avenue, opposite the City Archives, near the Colony Hotel and the fire station. The environment is quiet and pleasant, near the City Center Mall and Haifa’s port.

The house was built on a plot of 700 square meters and contains fifteen rooms, built so that the old house serves as a dining hall, kitchen and nurses’ station. The house is a preserved site. The building has three floors, on each floor five rooms. On the ground floor there is an office, a sitting room, a dining hall, kitchen and nurses’ station. Around the house there is a beautiful garden with places to sit for the enjoyment of the residents, their families and visitors.

The house was constructed thanks to a considerable contribution from a couple from Ettenheim in Germany. Another contribution was received from the Saint Marien parish in Grundhof in Germany. Members of the Hebrew speaking Catholic kehillot, some of whom are members of the association, also loaned money. The director of the association is Elisheva Hemker.

The name “Daniel House” was given after the death of Osvald Rufeisen, Brother Daniel OCD, who contributed much to the establishment of the house.

The house has a license for the administration of an old peopl’s residence and is under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Welfare. In order to be accepted to the house, there are two possibilities: to be referred by a local office of the Ministry of Social Welfare or privately. The rooms are spacious and have private bathrooms and most of them have a veranda. The house has access to convalescence facilities for those who need it.

Four experienced caregivers, three nurses, among them the head nurse, a qualified doctor, an experienced social worker, a physiotherapist, a cook, a cleaner and a handyperson form the team.

The services provided include laundry, cleaning, personal care for those who need it and night duty. The resident receive three main meals a day, prepared in house, and two snacks. Social activities include a concert given by a singer, and to broaden these activities children who do ballroom dancing come from the Beit HaGefen center. Before the holidays, pupils from one of the schools come to do activities with the residents.
