The event had a distinctively ecumenical character, with the theme of “Ways of Unity and Peace – Voices of prayer for the martyrs of today and for a spiritual ecumenism.” Representatives of various Christian Churches and Ecclesial Communities were present for the meeting with the Pope Francis, testifying to “the power of ecumenical prayer and the need for a new fraternity among Christians.”

In his address, Pope Francis pointed out: "Those who hate Jesus Christ and murder Christians... before killing them, they don't ask: Are you Lutheran? Orthodox? Evangelical? Baptist? Methodist? No. They say, you are Christian and then they slash your throat. They do not differentiate. They know that Christians have a common root that brings people to life and His name is Jesus Christ. It's the Holy Spirit that brings life.”

At the event, Israeli singer Ahinoam Nini (Noa) sang with Andrea Boccelli and other sngers the hymn “Amazing Grace”. See here (from 13:27 minutes to 17.54)
