On Saturday, June 27, the mass in the Haifa kehilla was celebrated in honor of John the Baptist, whose feast falls on June 24. He is the patron saint of the kehilla.

In his homily, Father Roman spoke about the similarity between John the Baptist and Elijah the prophet. They both were true prophets who were not afraid to speak before the people despite persecution and the danger of death. On the contrary, their fidelity to God even aroused fear, respect and admiration from kings.

In a very mysterious way, they were also both prophets of eternal life. Even though Elijah never addressed the subject of eternal life, God sought to reveal the mystery of the passage from life in this world to life after death through the narrative of the end of the life of Elijah. John the Baptist, as a prophet who came to prepare the way of Christ, said explicitly that whoever believes in the Son of God would have eternal life.

After mass, all the guests gathered in the courtyard of the kehilla’s home in order to continue the celebration with the reception. At this time, Father Yusuf, the parish priest of the Maronite community in Haifa, came to visit as he wanted to visit the chapel and wish the members of the community a happy feast.
