CRUCIFIXUS - Crucified

Miriam from the Haifa community has sent us a piece of music to help us enter the spirit of Good Friday.

Crucifixus, or Crucified in English, is the work of the Italian composer Antonio Lotti (1665-1740).

Lotti wrote in a variety of forms, producing masses, cantatas, madrigals, around thirty operas, and instrumental music. His sacred choral works are often unaccompanied (a cappella).

mategna - crucifixionAmongst the most famous of his compositions is the Crucifixus, written in 1718 for six and eight voices, a composition still regarded today as one of the greatest Italian church musical compositions.

In these days, as we advance each day toward the crucifixion of Christ, this piece brings us closer to the hard, moving and ultimate moment, when Christ offers himself to redeem our sins.

The Latin text is:
Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato passus et sepultus est.

English translation:
(He was) crucified also for us, under Pontius Pilate, (he) suffered and was buried.
