Pope Francis in Sarajevo


On Saturday, June 7, 2015, Pope Francis paid a visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.

pope bosniaPope Francis paid a 12 hour visit to the Bosnian capital, scene of terrible violence during the civil war that tore apart the ex-Yugoslavia. His visit was to promote reconciliation and dialogue in a country which still suffers from tensions and discrimination. Wherever he went, he was greeted by Orthodox Serbians, Catholic Croatians and Muslim Bosnians, challenged to live together and build a joint future.

He arrived in the morning and was greeted by the civil and religious authorities. View clip here

In the mass he celebrated in Sarajevo stadium, 60 000 people attended. A special place was reserved for the many wounded and mutilated in the war. View clip here

He later met with priests, seminarians and men and women religious. View clip here

In the afternoon, the Pope had a meeting with Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish leaders to promote interreligious relations. View clip here

Before leaving, the Pope had a meeting with young people.

Shortly after arriving, Pope Francis said: "In order to successfully oppose the barbarity of those who would make of every difference the occasion and pretext for further unspeakable violence, we need to recognize the fundamental values of human communities, values in the name of which we can and must cooperate, build and dialogue, pardon and grow; this will allow different voices to unite in creating a melody of sublime nobility and beauty, instead of the fanatical cries of hatred.”
