Desert Flower in the Judean Desert

The members of the youth group “Desert Flower” spent the weekend of Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, 2015, in the Judean Desert. Elena reports:

judean desert1Each month, the youth meet for a weekend together and this time the members of “Desert Flower” met for two days in the Judean Desert.

We travelled in two groups, one group from Beer Sheba and the other from Tel Aviv, picking up those that joined them coming from the north and from Jerusalem. When we reached Ein Gedi, we passed on to the Dead Sea, the lowest sea in the world. In this sea there is no life (no fish) and only salt and it is from here that salt is extracted that later we can buy in the supermarkets.

We continued on our way and when we arrived at our destination we pitched tents and prepared dinner. After dinner, we set up a campfire and sat around it as we listened to Father Piotr explain the connections between fire and wilderness and Jesus and he spoke too about the silence and the darkness that bear witness to how small we are in the enormous universe and he pointed to the stars that light up the darkness. We ended with a prayer and wished each other good night.

The following day, Saturday, we awoke and prayed morning prayer. After breakfast, we set off on an eight kilometer hike in the desert. During the hike we passed by to visit the statue of the fish we had made last November. At the end of the difficult hike along this desert park and having contemplated the breathtaking panoramas, we returned to the Dead Sea and ended our time together by going for a swim. In the prayer, at the end of the weekend, we gave thanks for all that we had received.

The members of the youth group then bade farewell to one another and set off for home.
