Jewish population in the world

According to a special section on YNET, Jews number today 14.4 million in the world. There are 6 336 400 Jews in Israel as opposed to 6 088 000 Jews in North America. There are 1 370 000 in Europe. There are 381 000 Jews in South America. There are 120 000 Jews in Australia. In Africa there are 74 000 Jews and the majority live in South Africa.

There is a debate about what defines a Jew and the numbers here are derived from the work of Israeli demographers who generally accept traditional definitions of who is a Jew. Other demographers differ and estimate the Jewish population in North America as much larger than what is registered here
